Chaumala's Story

Chaumala Laurent came to Miami from Haiti after being diagnosed with a skin cancer on the left portion of her face. 26 years old and alone in a Miami Jackson hospital room with the lower half of her left cheek surgically removed, is how we met Chaumala. From that day on, a friendship was formed, not only with Chaumala, but with her family as well.

Chaumala's illness claimed her life several months after she arrived in the states; she left behind her mother, father and nine brothers and sisters.

Chaumala was a teacher and dreamed of opening her own school in Haiti. Her brothers and sisters also aspire to learn and succeed; one of Chaumala's brothers, Luckner, dreams of becoming a doctor.  However, the harsh conditions in their country and their financial situation make that goal difficult to achieve.
